Dr. Carolyn Barley Britton
DR. CAROLYN BRITTON INSTALLED AS 109TH PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
Dr. Carolyn Britton, Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology, was installed as the 109th President of the National Medical Association on July 29th. The ceremony was held in Atlanta, Georgia during the NMA's annual convention. The National Medical Association, which was founded in 1895, represents the interests of more than 30,000 African-American physicians and the patients they serve. The NMA plays a historic and significant leadership role in American medicine, particularly in working to eliminate disparities in health and health care through advocacy and public education, and by helping create the legislation, programs and societal environment necessary for all Americans to lead healthy lives and have affordable access to high-quality health care. At a time that the AMA stood in opposition, the NMA was in the forefront of the effort to create Medicare and Medicaid. The NMA is now a leader in the fight to establish universal health care, and it also has a major commitment to global health needs. Dr. Britton has been active in the NMA for many years, having served as Chair of the Neurology/Neurosurgery Section, Chair of the Finance Committee, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and President-Elect. Her elevation now to the organization's highest office appropriately recognizes her many outstanding accomplishments and contributions both within and outside the NMA. The Department of Neurology and the Neurological Institute of New York take great pride in Dr. Britton's leadership roles in the NMA and congratulate her on this outstanding achievement.
