NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING

The Neuropsychology Service

Our Neuropsychology service provides comprehensive neuropsychological assessment of current cognitive functioning as well as an estimate of functioning before the onset of symptoms/illness. A clinical neuropsychologist conducts the evaluation and makes recommendations. A clinical neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with expertise in how behavior and skills are related to brain structures and systems.

What you can expect at your evaluation

The neuropsychologist conducts an interview with the patient and/or family, and testing. The neuropsychological assessment involves pencil and paper tests that evaluate general intellectual functioning, memory, attention, language, visual perception, motor skills, and personality functioning. The Neuropsychologist will interpret the data and prepare a written report based on these results.

What is assessed?

A typical neuropsychological evaluation will involve assessment of the following:
  • General Intellect
  • Higher level executive skills
  • Attention and concentration
  • Learning and memory
  • Language
  • Visual - spatial skills
  • Motor and sensory skills
  • Mood and personality

What can your results tell you?

Test results can be used to understand your situation in a number of ways.
  • Testing can identify weaknesses in specific areas
  • Test results can be used to differentiate among illnesses, which is important because appropriate treatment depends on accurate diagnosis
  • Sometimes testing may be used to establish a "baseline", or document a person's skills before there is any problem. In this way, later changes may be measured very objectively.
  • Test results can be used for treatment planning
  • Test results assist doctors in managing your care
