From the Chairman

On behalf of the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center and the New York–Presbyterian Hospital, I welcome you to explore our exceptional opportunities for neurological training at Columbia University. Founded in 1754, our prestigious University is among the oldest in this nation, and was one of the first to establish a dedicated program in the Neural Sciences. The Neurological Institute of New York was established in 1909 as the first specialty hospital in America devoted entirely to the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. Our combined history of influence and achievement within neurology is long and storied. Many of the field's most influential and transformative minds have trained and practiced within these walls. Several pioneers, including Drs. Arnold P. Gold, Lewis P. Rowland, Stanley Fahn, and Darryl C. De Vivo, remain active, accessible faculty members today. More than 100 years later, the Neurological Institute at New York–Presbyterian — Columbia University Medical Center remains a pillar of excellence within the field, and our illustrious legacy continues.

A recent study cites Columbia University's Department of Neurology as the top producer of academically active neurologists, as measured in both medical student and residency program graduates. Indeed, our commitment to academic excellence and advancement is stronger than ever. As the new Chairman of this historic department, it is the vast potential of our near and distant future, rather than our past, that is foremost on my mind. Innovations in research and cutting-edge technologies continue to revolutionize the field, and what was once inconceivable is now the bright prospect of neurology's tomorrow. We are closer than ever to providing real and lasting benefit to the many patients suffering with complex, and often devastating, neurological disorders. Within the Neurological Institute, our extraordinary faculty of leading clinicians, teachers, investigators and scientists have galvanized behind our bold, new momentum and, together, we stand well poised to lead this novel era of neurologic discovery.

Throughout the department, within our educational programs in particular, many exciting new initiatives are well underway. This year, a recent partnership with the New York–Presbyterian Hospital will allow Columbia's Neurology Residents to participate in rotations at the Weill Cornell Medical Center campus, neuro-oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and other electives or research on both medical campuses. There will be increased emphasis on collaborative practices and mentorship, which will provide students and faculty alike with even greater access to our department's incredible depth and breadth of knowledge. Trainees will find our environment to be open and inviting, and will enjoy great collegiality here at Columbia. As always, we will continue to support and promote the bright, young minds of neurology's future by fostering a broad and stimulating community in which to flourish. We welcome, and look forward to, your talented contribution.
