- Dr. David Savage is a graduate of the medical school at Columbia University in New York City. He was a medical resident, chief resident, and fellow in hematology-oncology at Harlem Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital, both Columbia affiliates. Dr. Savage holds American board certificates in medicine, medical oncology, and hematology. On the basis of his work in New York, Dr. Savage was awarded an Associate Professorship at Columbia University and a Fulbright Lectureship at the University of Zimbabwe in 1989. After 2 years as a clinical and academic hematologist in Harare, he moved to London, where he joined the Department of Hematology at the Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals. In this position his work focused principally on the hematological malignancies and allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplantation.
Dr. Savage's career has included periods as a physician and hematologist-oncologist in America, Africa, and Britain, where he has accumulated a broad experience in clinical hematology and medicine. In January 1996 he returned to the Hematology/Oncology Division at Columbia to broaden the institution's management of the hematological malignancies at New York Presbyterian and Harlem Hospitals. His clinical work is centered on the diagnosis and management of leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Dr. Savage holds American board certificates in medicine, medical oncology, and hematology. He serves as the Acting Director of the Adult Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant program at NYPH-Columbia and is the Chief of the Hematology-Oncology service at Harlem Hospital.
Dr. Savage's clinical research has been a major focus of his career and has led to a variety of publications, including papers on multiple myeloma, megaloblastic anaemia, pancytopenia, chronic myeloid leukaemia, and autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. He continues to compile one of the world's largest series of patients with hematological and neurological complications of cobalamin deficiency. He is investigating new treatments for the hematological malignancies, including innovative chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation protocols.
