Dr. Heshman completed her medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and finished her Internal Medicine residency and Medical Oncology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine. During that time she completed a Masters degree in Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health. She was appointed a faculty position at Columbia University in 2001, and since that time has developed an expertise in the areas of breast cancer survivorship, late-effects of cancer therapy, health outcomes, health disparities research and cancer clinical trials. She has been the director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program since 2001 and was a recipient of the Ewig Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006. In her first year on faculty, she was awarded career development awards from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute. Since that time she has received grants from the American Cancer Society, Department of Defense, The Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and the National Cancer Institute, as well as several clinical trials funded by the pharmaceutical industry. In 2007 she was awarded a highly prestigious Advanced Clinical Research Award in Breast Cancer from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and in 2009 she was chosen into the first group for the American Society of Clinical Oncology Leadership Development Program. She is involved in clinical trials research on a local and national level, working with many national leaders in the field. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the New York Phase II Cancer Consortium, MD Anderson Phase I prevention Consortium, and she is the co-chair of the Health Disparities and Outcomes Research Committee of the Southwest Oncology Group, where she is also on the breast cancer, supportive care and cancer survivorship committees. She is a principal investigator on several ongoing supportive care, treatment and ancillary studies. Dr. Hershman has a large clinical research program in breast cancer with collaboration linking clinical research, population based research and basic science research.
