- Dr. Hershman is the Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Co-Director of the Breast Program of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. She completed her medical degree at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and completed her internal medicine and oncology fellowship training at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. During that time she completed a Masters degree in Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health.
She was appointed a faculty position at Columbia University in 2001, and since that time has developed an expertise in the areas of breast cancer survivorship, late-effects of cancer therapy, health outcomes, health disparities research and cancer clinical trials. She has been the director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program since 2001 and was a recipient of the Ewig Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006.
In her first year on faculty she was awarded career development awards from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute. Since that time she has received grants from the American Cancer Society, Department of Defense, Susan Komen Foundation, Lance Armstrong Foundation, and the NCI, as well as several clinical trials grants funded by the pharmaceutical industry. In 2007 she was awarded a highly prestigious Advanced Clinical Research Award in Breast Cancer from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
She is involved in clinical trials research on a local and national level, working with many national leaders in the field. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the New York Phase II Cancer Consortium, MD Anderson Phase I prevention Consortium, and she is an active member of Southwest Oncology Group where she is on the breast cancer and translational breast cancer committees, and on the executive committee for special populations, and a member of the cancer prevention and control committee. She has been a co-I or PI on several ongoing supportive care, treatment and ancillary studies.
Dr. Hershman has worked extensively in the area of health outcomes and disparities research and has built a program with collaboration between clinical research, population based research and basic science research.
