Herbert Irving Cancer Center

Welcome

Welcome to the home page of the Division of Hematology/Oncology of the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center.

In collaboration with our many colleagues associated with the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, our doctors and staff are dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate care to patients with cancer and blood (hematologic) diseases.

In addition to patient care, we continue a nearly century-long history of conducting pioneering research to help further therapeutic approaches to solid tumors and hematologic disorders.

We are proud to be affiliated with the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital system and our physicians also care for patients at Harlem Hospital Center.

Please use the links throughout this site to connect to our people, research, or other resources.

Alfred I. Neugut, MD, PhD, the Myron M. Studner Professor of Cancer Research in Medicine and professor of epidemiology (Mailman), has received a three-year grant of $1.6 million from the National Cancer Institute for the Columbia-South Africa Training Program for Research on HIV-associated Malignancies. This program aims to strengthen the institutional base for bench-to-bedside research on HIV-related malignancies at three major institutions at the epicenter of the HIV pandemic and to give the rising generation of scientists a global health perspective. Dr. Neugut also has received a three-year Health Disparity Award of $717,000 from the DoD/Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program for research titled "Racial Disparities in Palliative Care for Prostate Cancer." The study will explore key variables, especially race, but also tumor and provider characteristics and health care settings, which can be analyzed from a large population-based administrative database, and investigate their roles in three common palliative settings among prostate cancer patients.
