THE FRANK A. CALDERONE PRIZE
This preeminent award is given every two years to an individual who has accomplished work of extraordinary distinction in the field of public health or has made a specific discovery or contribution that has had long-term national or global implications in the areas of communicable diseases, environmental health, epidemiology, social and/or behavioral medicine, health policy, or any aspect of health promotion and disease prevention. The Frank A. Calderone Prize consists of a distinctive medal and a cash award of $10,000-it is one of the most prestigious and largest single monetary awards given to a public health professional. Once selected, the recipient is asked to deliver an original lecture during a springtime luncheon hosted by the Mailman School. The distinguished roster of past award recipients include: 2005: Mary Robinson, MA, LLB, Executive Director, Ethical Globalization Initiative, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and former President of Ireland. 2003: Peter Piot, MD, PhD, Executive Director of UNAIDS and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations. 2001: Nafis Sadik, MD, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the former Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). 1999: D. A. Henderson, MD, Director, Center for Civilian Biodefense Studies, Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. 1996: William Foege, MD, MPH, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 1994: the late Jonathan Mann, MD, MPH, former director of the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. 1992: C. Everett Koop, MD, ScD, former Surgeon General of the United States. Background The Frank A. Calderone Prize at the Mailman School was established in 1986 through the generosity of Dr. Calderone and his family to mark his life-long commitment to the health of the public. If you wish to submit the name of an individual for consideration by the prize selection committee, please click here to download a ballot form. All nominations must be submitted by November 10, 2006. If you have any questions, please contact Jessica Shaffer at js2862@columbia.edu. |
