Subject: Informed Consent/Surrogate
Consent Policy
The Columbia IRB has released a revised informed consent
policy that allows the use of surrogate consent for research that provides the
prospect of direct benefit to subjects and for which the IRB has approved the
surrogate consent. The new policy on surrogate consent can be found on
pages 6 and 7 of the “Informed Consent Policy” that was revised on
4-1-10.
The revised policy has also removed the requirement of handing subjects a copy
of a “signed” consent form. The Columbia IRB strongly recommends such a
practice in accordance with the GCP guidelines. All research subjects
must be given a copy of the consent form when a signed consent form is required
by the IRB.
The policy can be found at http://www.cumc.columbia.edu/dept/irb/policies/index.html
