Housing

Information and applications for housing are mailed to all students accepted into the M.S. or Ph.D. programs at the Institute. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible in order to maximize their chances for securing residences.

Housing at the Health Sciences On-Campus Housing

Over 1,000 students reside on the Health Sciences campus in University accommodations. Housing for both single students and couples is available to full-time matriculated students. The goal of the Health Sciences Housing Office is to provide on-campus housing for as many incoming students as possible. Although on-campus housing is not guaranteed, every effort is made by the Housing Office to provide on-campus housing to students who are coming from outside the metropolitan area.

General information and housing information/application request cards are distributed by the admissions office of your school. Upon receipt of these cards, you should complete the two Housing Request Cards/Mailing Labels and return them to the Housing Office as instructed. Their return will inform the office that you would like either a single or couples student housing application sent to you. Applications are distributed in early May.

Off-Campus Housing

The newly established Off-Campus Housing Resource Center has been developed to provide those students who are interested in living in the Morningside or Washington Heights community with the tools and resources needed to find an apartment. The office maintains a list of brokers, available apartments, and useful tips on security and maximizing your search time. The office is located in Bard Hall, Room 105.

Health Sciences Housing includes the Office of University Residence Halls (URH)-Bard Hall and the Georgian Residence and University Housing (UAH) Bard-Haven Towers at 60/100 Haven Avenue, 106/154 Haven Avenue. The Health Sciences Housing Assignment Office/Bard Hall/50 Haven Avenue, New York, NY 10032, (212) 304-7000, is responsible for handling all housing requests and assignments for these two housing divisions. In addition, the office is responsible for the management of the URH buildings, the Off-Campus Resource Center, and the Bard Athletic Center.

International Students

The staff of the Office of the International Student Adviser, 208 Lewisohn, provides advice and counseling to international students on such matters as housing, personal and financial problems, and regulations of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (visas, extensions of stay, work permission, temporary absence from the United States, transfer from Columbia to another school, termination of study). Information about the various international student clubs at Columbia and about opportunities to attend conferences, travel in the United States, and participate in community and cultural activities may be obtained from this office. Maps of New York City and discount tickets to concerts and plays are also available.

The staff of the Office of International Student Admissions, 208 Lewisohn, provides information and counseling on admission to the University, advanced standing, English proficiency examinations, and academic placement.
