Mission - The mission of the Institute of Human Nutrition (IHN) is to provide outstanding academic, professional education, and training programs in human nutrition and conduct basic science and translational research on the role of nutrition in human health. The Institute’s educational outreach includes conferences, symposia, and other initiatives for health practitioners, educators, industry, and non-profit organizations to advance knowledge on nutrition’s role in health and disease for individuals and populations worldwide. Since celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 2005, the Institute has embarked upon a strategic plan for the next decade to expand research and educational initiatives, alumni programs, fund-raising, and global dissemination of its nutrition education and intervention programs.

Why should I be interested in nutrition? Training and expertise in nutrition can lead to exciting career opportunities in a variety of settings, including the healthcare sector, basic science and pharmaceutical industry research, biomedical communications, and public and global health. Nutrition is fast becoming a major modality in biomedical sciences, general healthcare, and preventive medicine. Graduate education in nutrition will enhance your medical or doctoral training.

How long does it take? The Master of Science (M.S.) can be completed in one year (twelve months) on a full-time basis.

What are some of the topics covered? The M.S. program provides rigorous training in basic nutrition science, the macronutrients, the micronutrients, the impact of nutrition on growth and development, molecular biology and nutrition, and clinical nutrition. Courses that enhance the students’ knowledge of foods and the counseling process are also available. The curriculum also includes courses that train students to critically evaluate current research articles in the field of nutrition and related areas. In addition to core courses, students may select electives that focus on basic nutrition science, epidemiology, and clinical nutrition.

What courses do I need in order to apply? Applicants to the M.S. program must have completed two years of chemistry and one year of biology. They must submit either the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). An elementary course in biochemistry is desireable.

Is financial aid available? Yes, financial aid is available to qualified students.

What are the deadlines for admission? Applications are reviewed throughout the year on a rolling admissions basis. To maximize your chances for obtaining housing and lower-interest loans, applications should be submitted as soon as possible.
