Plasma and Serum Storage

Isolating Plasma from Blood Samples

  1. Assign Lab ID# to the Blood tubes and to the 1.0 ml cryogenic vials used for plasma storage.
  2. Centrifuge Blood tubes at 1500 rpm for 15 minutes.
  3. Pipette 1 ml of the Plasma from the Blood tube (the upper phase) into the vial.  Store the vials containing the plasma at -70C

Isolating Serum from Blood Samples

Red Top Vacutainer tubes are used for Serum Collection

  1. Assign Lab ID# to the Blood tubes and to the 1.0 ml cryogenic vials used for serum storage.
  2. Centrifuge Blood tubes at 1500 rpm for 15 minutes.
  3. Pipette 1 ml of the serum from the Blood tube (the upper phase) into the vial.  Store the vials containing the serum at -70C

Aliquoting DNA samples for genotyping experiments for existing clients

  1. The DNA concentrations of the samples in ng/ul are measured by absorbance readings at A260.
  2. An aliquot of the DNA sample is prepared by pipetting the volume containing the required amount of DNA and making up the remaining volume to 1ml with water.
  3. The required amount of DNA is specified for different studies by the existing clients.
