Special Programs And Affiliated Departments

THE INTEGRATED PROGRAM FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH:

Our department is affiliated with the Integrated Program in Cellular, Molecular and Biophysical Studies, which also includes Genetics, Microbiology and other departments at Columbia University. Students who are specifically interested in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics currently apply directly for admission, but in future years, it is anticipated that all students will be admitted through a unified program that includes the basic biomedical science departments at the Health Science Campus. Although students are encouraged to apply directly to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, once admitted they are permitted to work in laboratories in other departments.

DEPARTMENTS ON THE MORNINGSIDE CAMPUS:

Investigators in the Department work closely with research groups in the Departments of Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Physics, and Applied Physics, which are located at the Morningside Campus. Because the Health Sciences Campus is located approximately two miles north of the Morningside campus, free shuttles are provided throughout the day in order to link the two campuses. Students are encouraged to interact extensively with their colleagues on the Morningside campus, attending lectures, courses, and in some cases, performing rotations in Morningside departments.

THE HOWARD HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE AT COLUMBIA:

Eight professors in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics are associated with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Professors Axel, Goff, Hobert, Greenwald, Hendrickson, Honig, Jessell, and Kandel all receive funding from HHMI. The strong presence of HHMI within the Department allows for generous resources that are available at few other research institutions. In addition, this HHMI affiliation attests to the high quality of research and education within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics.

AUDUBON RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER:

Located adjacent to the Health Sciences Campus, this new facility is closely linked to academic research at Columbia and within the Department. Its mission is to foster biotechnology by providing incubator space and interaction between corporate and academic laboratories.

THE COLUMBIA GENOME CENTER:

Headed by Isidore Edelman, former chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, the Columbia Genome Center is involved in mapping, sequencing and characterizing mutant genes associated with human disease. These include genetic rearrangements and mutations linked to leukemias, metabolic disorders and psychiatric illness. The center is a resource for investigators who become involved in mapping or genomic characterization.
