Cancer of the Liver
By Howard J. Worman, M. D.
The term liver cancer is not a specific diagnosis. Many cancers can affect
the liver. Most of the liver cancers people refer to in the Western world
are cancers that originate in other organs and spread to the liver via the
bloodstream. These are called metastatic cancers. In patients with chronic
liver disease, particularly cirrhosis, primary cancers can originate in the liver, mostly being hepatocellular
carcinomas. These are the most common liver cancers in Asia and some parts
of Africa. Primary cancers of the bile ducts are called cholangiocarcinomas.
