Fellowship Training

There are two major types of fellowship training offered in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian that lead to board-eligibility in gastroenterology. These are the Research Track and the Clinical Educator Track. Positions in both tracks of the program are awarded on a competitive basis and formal application is required. Trainees will not be able to switch between tracks once accepted into the fellowship program and applicants need to indicate the track they are applying for on the application. Applicants should carefully read the following to learn about the different tracks:

Research Track

The primary goal of the Research Track is to train academic gastroenterologists for research-focused faculty positions at medical schools. The Research Track will include 1 year of clinical training followed by 2 to 3 years of research training. During these later 2 to 3 years, fellows will have only one clinic a week, a few hours of procedure time and occassinal weekend call responsibilities. The vast majority of their time will be spent on a focused research project under the supervision of a qualified mentor with a track record of training fellows. The majority of available training options are in basic laboratory investigation. Training in clinical epidemiology or bioinformatics is also possible for select appropriate fellows. Clinical Educator Track

The goal of the Clinical Educator Track is to train fellows to be outstanding clinical gastroenterologists and also to obtain teaching and research skills necessary to become clinical faculty members. This Track offers 3 years of intensive clinical training. It also includes 3 to 6 months of clinical research experience.
