Services: Harlem United Community AIDS Center is committed to providing quality HIV prevention and care services in a safe environment while uniting the diverse communities of Harlem in order to address all the needs of people living with and threatened by HIV and AIDS. The Center fulfills its commitment through physical, emotional, social and spiritual empowerment regardless of one’s age, sexual orientation or identity, national origin or ethnicity. The COBRA program expands the continuum of care offered by Harlem United by increasing case management services available to individuals and families with HIV/AIDS enabling them to achieve stability and independence in their lives. It ensures access to medical care community-based services, offering opportunities to improve program members’ self-esteem and educate program members about HIV prevention. The Pastoral Care Services is dedicated to meeting the spiritual and emotional needs of program members. It incorporates a holistic approach that provides complementary and alternative therapies. Specifically, the program offers bereavement counseling, esteem building, transitional planning, permanency planning, memorial celebration, home and hospital visits, care-giver support meditation, yoga and visualization techniques, liturgical celebration and quarterly retreats. The Prevention, Education and Policy Department provides HIV services to the communities in Upper Manhattan. The department targets people at risk through a variety of venues including bars, clubs, parks, crack houses, and shooting galleries. Its purpose is to provide information on HIV prevention. The Scattered Site Housing program attempts to bring a person from homelessness to independent living in a caring and cost effective manner. An important component of the Housing Program is the effort to ensure that the children of program members have a home and a plan for their future when their guardians die. The Volunteer Services Department offers a variety of support to agency programs in general and program members in particular while making a conscious effort to recruit a volunteer base reflective of the population served. This is done through unique and culturally sensitive recruitment and retention techniques. Perhaps the program of most interest is the "Buddy Program." Divided into four categories, program members can choose either a "household buddy," "hospital buddy," "traditional buddy," or a "buddy at large." The Women and Children Program provides units of housing to women and children. All services are designed with the intent of increasing the client’s empowerment through the development of independence skills. This creates client self-sufficiency that is vital in keeping families together and out of the foster care system. Support groups that address critical issues and training are also provided.
