Harlem is predominantly African American, schools in the district reflect a diverse
population. The mission of Community School Board District 5 is to promote the
systematic improvement of student outcomes by providing an academically and culturally
enriched environment of high learning standards and expectations. The District’s
motto is "Excellence Expected, No Excuses Accepted." The District’s
collaborations with Chase, Bank Street College, Fordham University, CCNY, Columbia
University and the District’s Advisory Team have facilitated support for instructional
and staff development programs. Through infusion of technology, parental involvement,
and the pursuit of outside resources, the Community School Board is determined to instill

Services: Community School Board District 6 remains committed to its mandate to provide all
students with a rigorous program of instruction that supports the academic, affective and
social needs of children in the community. To that end, the expansion of extended day and
Saturday programs were put in place. School Leadership Teams in District 6 schools were
established and functional in advance of the mandated start date. The extended school year
program includes a day and sleep over camp program for 800 students, in addition to the 4,500
students served in the site-based summer program. The implementation of standards based
professional development remains a cornerstone of the efforts to deliver quality instruction.
Community School Board District 6 has also expanded the number of teachers participating in
on-site graduate programs leading to New York State certification for uncertified staff. These
efforts ensure students an education that will prepare them for their future.
