The Summer Science Research Program provides the opportunity for secondary school classroom
science teachers in public, private or parochial schools to work in a research laboratory
under the supervision of a mentor who is a member of the Columbia University faculty. The
teacher works in the lab for eight weeks during each of two consecutive summers. In addition
to planning, executing and reporting on research experiments, the teachers participate in
weekly seminars on a variety of topics and develop plans for incorporating new ideas and
activities into their classrooms. Teachers are provided with a stipend in addition to funds
to purchase classroom materials and supplies, a modem for their school computer and access
to America Online, an internet provider.
