Since its inception in 1967, the Youth Opportunity Program (YOP) at the New York State Psychiatric Institute has sought to provide at risk high school students in the Washington Heights area with the vocational, academic and personal guidance necessary to ensure individual growth and development. The program demonstrates that the health and health services field is a viable area for future employment while exposing students to a highly intellectual environment. Through guest lectures, YOP has brought issues of legislation as well as education to the attention of its students.
