The Depression Evaluation Service is an outpatient research and treatment program in operation since 1977. It conducts studies of antidepressant medications to promote knowledge of depressive disorders and to identify methods for matching specific treatments to different forms of these disorders. Men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 who suffer from depression are eligible. Patients with alcohol abuse as well as depression can be treated in special programs available for these problems. Medical assessment is part of the comprehensive program. All patients are required to have a physical examination which is arranged at a modest cost. Other medical procedures including electrocardiograms and routine blood tests are done at no cost to patients. All subsequent treatment, including psychiatric visits and medication, is free.
