The Metabolic Bone Diseases Program at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center evaluates and
treats patients with osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. The program offers a
complete set of state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to diseases of the
skeleton. Patients are referred by physicians who suspect that a metabolic bone disorder
such as osteoporosis may exist. The program’s capabilities include comprehensive initial
evaluation and appropriate blood, urine, radiological imaging tests; sophisticated assays
for calciotropic hormones; other circulating indices of bone metabolism and urinary markers;
dual energy x-ray absorbptiometry; and quantitative static and dynamic histormorphometric
analysis of the percutaneous bone biopsy. Prompt feedback on all referred patients is an
additional important feature of the program. In special situations and in conjunction with
the referring physician, patients may be offered the opportunity to participate in one of a
number of ongoing clinical research programs funded by the National Institutes of Health at
Columbia -Presbyterian Medical Center.
