The mission of the Harlem Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention is to reduce
excess mortality and morbidity in the Harlem community. The Center works in partnership
with community-based organizations, academic institutions, government and private agencies
to achieve its mission through the following activities: assessment of the health status
of the Harlem community and examination of the risk factors and protective factors that
contribute to health status planning, implementation and evaluation of prevention research
programs and strategies designed to reduce mortality and morbidity in the Harlem community
and training future generations of prevention researchers, including students, health care
