The Columbia Center for the Active Life of Minority Elders (CALME) provides minority researchers
with mechanisms to enhance ties with leaders in the surrounding community and experts in the
field of aging. CALME is a National Institute on Aging funded Resource Center for Minority
Aging Research (RCMAR) where statisticians, methodologists and experts in the field of aging
share expertise with minority researchers. The Center's main goal is to provide opportunity,
support, and guidance in the field of aging and to demonstrate pathways to bridge existing gaps
in health status and care between minority and majority aging populations. Each year as a way of
encouraging minority investigators, the Center presents four pilot grant awards to qualified
minority investigators. Applications for pilot study awards are publicized through the Center's
newsletter and web page. The Center works closely with community leaders in the field of aging
and presents research findings and health education to the community. The Center is composed of
an External Advisory Board and a Community Advisory Board.
