The Mobile Dental Center is a collaborative effort between the Columbia University School
of Dental and Oral Surgery and The Children’s Aid Society Department of Dentistry. The
two-chair mobile facility provides comprehensive diagnostic, preventive and restorative
dental care to preschool-aged children in the Washington Heights/Inwood and Harlem
communities of northern Manhattan. Services include oral exams, sealants, tooth brushing
instructions, fillings, fluoride treatments, x-rays and extractions. By collaborating
with headstarts, family day cares and elementary preschool programs, the Center delivers
services directly at program sites. Through the provision of onsite health promotion and
disease prevention information, the Mobile Dental Center seeks to educate children on the
importance of oral health. The outreach and enrollment component identifies uninsured
children and works directly with families to determine eligibility and enroll them into
Medicaid or Child Health Plus.
