Community Affairs

Government and Community Affairs maintains collaborative relations with neighboring organizations and partners.  The office works with local elected officials, city agencies, and community services providers to address health care issues of concern to the community.  In collaboration with our affiliate partners, New York Presbyterian and New York State Psychiatric Institute, Government and Community Affairs manages the Medical Center Neighborhood Fund, a volunteer donation effort that supports the most vulnerable non-for-profit agencies in our community; we coordinate the annual community food drive, and the use of university facilities by community organizations.  The office helps to establish academic and community partnerships that yield a range of health education and promotion, mentoring and clinical support services to community residents.



America Reads Program

The America Reads program is a collaborative effort of the Office of Community Affairs and the Office of Student Financial Planning--Federal Work Study.  The program partners with local elementary school with the goal of insuring that all children are reading at grade level.  A nation-wide program designed to employ college students "as reading tutors for children to help insure that all children will read independently and on grade level by thrid grade".

Summer Youth Employment Program

The program is a collaboration between GCA, community organizations and the New York City Division of Youth Services.  The program places over 150 youth in various Medical Center departments to work as part of the Summer Youth Employment Program.  The youth interest to promote first-hand experience and mentoring relations.  To learn more about the Summer Youth Employment Program, please visit http://www.nyc.gov/html/dyc.

Community Health Academy Mentoring Program

Working in partnership with Community League of the Heights, a multi-service community based organization and our affiliate partner, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the Medical Center coordinates a unique volunteer mentoring program.  Hospital and University faculty, students and administrators serve as mentor to 6-12 grade students interested in the health sciences career track.  To learn more about CHAH mentoring program and/or to be a mentor, please contact us at cumcgca@columbia.edu

Dyckman Institute Scholarship

The Dyckman Institute Scholarship provides financial support to outstanding students from the Washington Heights/Inwood area who attend Columbia College.  The Dyckman Institute Scholarship is one of 300 individual need-based scholarships available to Columbia students.  In the current academic year, more than 50 undergraduate students from Washington Hieghts/Inwood are receiving more than $550,000 in need-based scholarships from Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science.  Students from the Washington Heights/Inwood area, regardless of where they attend high school, who are interested in learning more about Columbia College and the Dyckman Institute Scholarship should contact the Admissions Office at (212) 854-2522 or go to http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/.

Medical Center Neighborhood Fund

The Medical Center Neighborhood Fund was founded as a joint effort of Columbia University Medical Center, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and the New York State Psychiatric Institute to enhance the quality of life in the Washington Heights/Inwood community.  The Fund is dedicated to raising funds for local, nonprofit organizations that offer vital services and opportunities in northern Manhattan.  Currently, the Fund grants more than 60 awards to local organizations.  Employees from all three instutions are invited to make a donation and volunteer their time as site visitors.

Ft. Washington Farmer's Market

The outdoor Farmer's Market take place at 168th Street and Ft. Washington Avenue and brings local foods and health education to patients, employees, students and the community.  The market operates every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from July-December.  In addition to its food offering, the market host cooking demonstrations, nutritional counseling and health-related outreach events.  To learn more about the farmers market, you may visit chalk.nyc.org.

CUMC Facilities Use by Non-affiliated groups

As part of our relations with our neighboring organizations, the Medical Center provides access to its facilities by community groups to hold meetings and conduct activities that are of interest and free to area residents.  Organizations desiring to use the facilities must be a non-for-profit organization (501c3) and must and must adhere to University policies and procedures relating to space use.  Facilities use requests must be submitted in writing to cumcgca@columbia.edu.


Special Events

Coogan's 5K Run Medical Center Challenge

Coogan's Annual Salsa, Blues & Shamrocks 5K Run is a celebration of the strong community ties and rich cultural diversity of northern Manhattan. The race is founded on the premise that "kids who run do better in school". The scenic route circles the historic Cloisters and returns to 169th Street. New York City Road Runners calls this "the best road race outside of Central Park". 

Annual Food Drive

The annual food drive is time around the Thanksgiving holiday and it encourages our campus community to donate canned goods to a local food pantry.  CUMC's donations of canned goods are given to Fresh Youth Initiatives' HHFB, New York City's only youth-run, adult-facilitated food pantry.  Campus food donations are distributed by FYI to thousands of people in the Washington Heights/Inwood community.

Annual Toy Drive

Every year, the Office of Government & Community Affairs coordinates an annual toy drive.  Columbia University Medical Center employees donate more than 600 toys.  Toys are distributed to local daycare centers, head start programs and community-based organizations serving needy families in the Washington Heights/Inwood community.
