Education Resources: This second meeting of the OSS committee was devoted to review of services and resources of the offices, committees and units that support health science education. This review was requested by faculty in the previous meeting since many faculty were only vaguely familiar with many of the groups. The focus of the review was on the services offered, not on the financing or administrative structure of these units. Prior to the meeting the committee Chair had met with heads of each unit to discuss what services they provide, and how these services related to the services provided by other units. Each unit head provided a brief summary of their educational support that they offer, and these were distributed at the meeting and can be found on the Education Strategic Planning Phase II website http://www.cumc.columbia.edu/dept/fischbach/strategic_plan2.html. The following units were interviewed:

  • Classroom Management and Scheduling
  • Biomedical Communications
  • Library
  • Center for Academic Information Technology (CAIT)
  • ACIS - CourseWorks
  • Student Information Systems (SIS)
  • Center for Education Research and Evaluation (CERE)
  • Center for New Media Teaching and Learning (CNMTL)
  • Curriculum Design Studio (CDS)
  • Digital Knowledge Ventures (DKV)

This review was seen as an important step before the retreat. The goal of the retreat will be to identify and prioritize the services and resources that faculty across the schools see as essential to developing and delivering the highest quality education programs. Although Columbia has a plethora of different services it is not clear which ones faculty perceive as essential to their goals, or where there may be gaps. Once the faculty have clearly defined their core needs, we will be in a position to develop a way to easily access the services that do exist here, and to recommend critical enhancements. The final product for the one-stop shopping committee will culminate from a combination of the vision prepared by the one-stop shopping committee and details worked out by the steering committee (Committee for Excellence in Health Science Education (CEHSE).

Ideas about how to best access these resources will be generated and discussed at subsequent meetings. One possibility is an Education Resource webpage that would serve as a single integrated portal to access all existing, needed resources.

There was some discussion of administrative complexities and "fiefdoms" that exist across resource units. The steering committee will address these issues as necessary and help create a feasible vision with cost recovery models if necessary. However, the task ahead for the faculty on this committee is to determine what their needs and priorities are and what resources are needed to help realize that vision.

The website for Phase II of Education Strategic Planning will go live within the next week. All relevant resource documents, agendas, minutes from both the "one-stop shopping" committee and the Committee for Excellence in Health Sciences Education can be accessed through the site. Reviews of medical education centers and simulation centers (posted on the webpage) at other institutions could provide important information and ideas for us to consider. The link will be sent to all committee members via email once it goes live.
