Dear Health Sciences Faculty and Staff:
The strategic plan for education, points out that the 600 plus post doctoral trainees, who constitute a quarter of all researchers in the Health Sciences Division, require a centralized administrative office. Many other institutions have recently established post doc offices to provide an organized core of needed services.
We will establish an Office of Post-Doctoral Affairs under the direction of an Associate Dean for Post-Doctoral Affairs who will report directly to Harvey R. Colten, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Research. Inf ormation about the Associate Dean position, including a more complete job description, can be found at. An administrators position has also been posted.
The primary mission of the Office of Post-Doctoral Affairs will be to expedite and insure the recruitment of high quality post-docs, to support training and career development and to develop collaborative relationships among the post-docs, faculty and administration.
Administratively, this office will identify and monitor post doctoral trainees; develop policies on appointments; coordinate, orientation, benefits, and housing; plan educational events; and implement and maintain web-based information for this group.
The advantages and importance of creating a post-doc community and an Office of Post-Doctoral Affairs are obvious, and identifying and securing funds for personnel and equipment remain critical. Financing mechanisms will involve partnerships with investigators and with departments who are employing post-doctoral trainees.
It is my hope that this office will be operational early in 2003.
Regards,
Gerald D. Fischbach, M.D.
