New York-Presbyterian Hospital Construction Project
Dear CUMC Community,
On August 1, 2008, New York-Presbyterian Hospital will commence an extensive PH building façade project which is expected to be completed by November 2008.
During this time, major portions of the garden will be fenced off and inaccessible. Click here to view a drawing depicting the fencing, netting and sidewalk bridges that will be erected in the garden during the project.
This is all the information available at this time, but I will provide additional updates as they become available.
Thank you,

Summer Energy Conservation Tips
WHAT WE ARE DOING
During the day, we are using our central chiller plant to cool the buildings. During the night, due to the lighter load, we are raising our chilled water temperature, "pre-cooling," which reduces energy demand during peak hours.
We will also have additional Facilities staff on hand to provide faster response to service requests and emergencies. Our Facilities Service Center (x53753) is prepared to handle increased client calls.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
You can help Columbia conserve by following these easy steps:
- Turn off air conditioners when a room is unoccupied.
- Set air conditioner fan speed to the lowest setting possible.
- Keep exterior doors, windows, shades and blinds closed as much as possible.
- Turn lights and appliances off when not needed.
STAY SAFE
Stay safe and cool this summer with these tips from the American Red Cross:
- Dress for the heat. Wear light lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy. It is also a good idea to wear hats or to use an umbrella.
- Drink water. Carry water or juice with you and drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.
- Slow down. Avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.
- Stay indoors when possible.

Columbia University Medical Center Facilities is going forward with a purchasing agreement with SCA for Roll Paper Towels.
SCA is considered by many to be the most environmentally-friendly paper company in the world. Their products are produced nearly exclusively from renewable and recyclable materials and we are very much looking forward to developing a long-lasting relationship with this distributor.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design training (LEED)
On June 12th, members of our Project Management team went to the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) training, as a part of the Medical Center’s commitment to the adoption of sustainable green building and development practices.
The team learned ways to incorporate green initiatives in current projects, such as the use of LEED-certified furniture, energy efficient lighting, sustainable flooring, low VOC paint, and natural wall coverings in the Dean’s suite of the Mailman School of Public Health.
