| Research Areas |
| The research in my laboratory addresses basic biological and clinical issues related to blinding disorders. Investigations are ongoing in two distinct areas. First, we are exploring pathogenic events at the cellular and molecular level that lead to age-related macular degeneration. This research is rooted in cell biology and chemistry and gives emphasis to the problems that beset the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) as it partners with photoreceptor cells to enable phototransduction.
In work having immediate clinical relevance, we are also endeavoring to introduce a vitreous substitute material that can be used in the treatment of complex retinal detachments, and that is compatible with long-term placement in the eye. Studies in animal models and in tissue culture are essential to the development of these materials for clinical use.
