The Shapiro Lab works to understand how cell adhesion, mediated by proteins on cell surfaces, helps to shape cells into tissues and define the connectivity between neurons in functional circuits. We employ a structural and biophysical approach, using x-ray crystallography to determine atomic-level structures of adhesion proteins and to characterize their adhesive properties.
