Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries. There is no effective treatment for the most prevalent atrophic form of AMD. RPE abnormalities are thought to be the primary lesion in atrophic AMD; however, it is degeneration of photoreceptors that leads to the loss of vision. Preservation of macular rods is a valid anti-AMD strategy. My research is focused on characterization of eye-specific nuclear receptors as potential drug targets for therapeutic intervention in AMD and other forms of retinal degeneration.
