  What types of degrees are offered?
Degrees are not offered directly through this program at this time.  However upon successful completion of the program, students will have earned 10 academic credits and they may wish to apply for a formal degree program.  Please visit this page.


Do you offer any part-time or evening programs?
No. CSRI is an intensive 5-week program. The 2012 program will run from July 2 to August 7.

What is the time commitment for this program?
Classes run Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm. Additional time outside the classroom is also required to complete assignments and projects. We strongly recommend that students have no other commitments for the duration of the program.


What support systems are available for disabled students?
We work directly with the University’s Office of Disability Services (ODS) to help make personalized accommodations for students with disabilities.


What are the admissions deadline dates?
Applications will be accepted until April 1, 2012, for the 2012 summer program.


What is required for admission to the Columbia Summer Research Institute?
There are three routes of applications: 1) with financial support from your department or division, 2) self-supported, or 3) through a CER opportunity. 
  • WITH FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT OR DIVISION:  Applicants whose tuition and fees will be paid by their supervisor may submit the “short form” application, consisting of:
    • The application form, available here.
    • Curriculum vitae
    • A personal statement of no more than 500 words, describing your research interests, career goals, and reasons for applying to the program
    • Two letters of reference from individuals who can comment knowledgeably on your research potential; one must come from your department chair or division chief, and must indicate that your department/division will assume financial costs for your participation in the program. Assurance that the candidate will be given time off (no clinical or work duties) for the duration of the program must also be included.

  • SELF-SUPPORTED: Applicants who assume responsibility for their own tuition must submit a standard application, consisting of:
    • The official application form, found here
      (IMPORTANT: Under the section “Application Data” in the Application for Admission, please select “Special (Nondegree)” for the Degree field and “Columbia Summer Research Institute” for the Primary Program of Interest field.  Fill in the rest of the fields as applicable.) See a screen shot here.
    • Non-refundable application fee of $60
    • Transcripts from all previous undergraduate and graduate training programs
    • Curriculum vitae
    • A personal statement of no more than 500 words, describing your research interests, career goals, and reasons for applying to the program
    • Two letters of reference; one must be from the candidate’s department chair or immediate supervisor, assuring that the candidate will be given time off (no clinical or work duties) for the duration of the program.

  • THROUGH A CER OPPORTUNITY: Applicants who would like to be considered for funded training will apply through PRIDE:
    • Recognizing the urgent and compelling need to promote diversity, the PRIDE award (FIRST in CER) will provide rigorous training and mentoring opportunities to diverse junior faculty members and equip them with the essential skills needed to conduct comparative effectiveness research and analyze some of the most complex health problems in the nation. Components of this 14-month program include: didactic training through the Columbia Summer Research Institute, mentoring experience, grant writing support and CER seminars. What type of degree do I need to apply to the Columbia Summer Research Institute?
The CSRI is open to post-doctoral fellows and faculty who hold doctorate degrees in a clinical discipline.

When can I expect to receive a decision on my application?
Decisions are made on a rolling basis.  Complete applications are typically reviewed within one month of submission.


What is the cost of attendance?
The estimated cost of the 5-week program for 2012 is $13,260 plus fees of $1,210.


Is financial aid available?
Financial aid is not available at this time.  Applicants may seek the support of their department or division. Qualified applicants may apply through PRIDE, a funded training program.


Is housing available?
We do not offer housing options at this time. CSRI pariticipants are responsible for finding their own housing.
