  • The Dr. Oz Show Premieres

    The first episode of the Dr. Oz Show aired Monday, September 14 at 3:00 PM on Fox Channel 5 in New York, and Fox network channels across the U.S. The show will air every weekday at 3 PM, with repeats of each episode the following morning at 11 AM.   • New York Post Publishes Oz Profile with Focus on Show

    The New York Post published an interview with Dr. Mehmet Oz on September 2, 2009, in which he answered questions such as whether Oprah will appear on the Dr. Oz show ("If there's a good reason for her to be on our show — if she's onto something America needs to hear and I can put it in a context that might make it work — well, of course."), and whether he will continue to do surgery ("I'll always practice medicine. I can't imagine not doing that," he replied, but said that he didn't plan to operate by himself any more. "I always want one other surgeon in the OR with me, because I think it's really important for someone to be in charge of that patient if I have to go to the studio.")
  • ABC Spotlights Dr. Oz

    During August and September, 2009, ABC-TV aired a series of segments featuring Dr. Oz, timed to coincide with the Sept. 14 premiere of "The Dr. Oz Show." On Aug. 24, he appeared live on Good Morning America, where he discussed a new Archives of Internal Medicine study that shows diet and exercise can reduce the risk for chronic diseases by nearly 80 percent. That evening, Nightline profiled Dr. Oz, introducing him as "one of the country's most prominent physicians." The segment showed Diane Sawyer with Dr. Oz in the OR for a heart surgery; and highlighted a music-and massage therapy session — the latter an example of complementary medicine techniques he has championed. The next day, Good Morning America broadcast extra footage of Diane Sawyer's time in the OR and highlighted Dr. Oz's emphasis on disease-preventive lifestyle choices. The Aug. 31, program aired a segment focused on complementary medicine.
  • Oprah Bids Farewell to Dr. Oz as He Embarks on His Own TV Series

    Oprah toasted Dr. Oz during the May 12, 2009 "Oprah," which marked the last of Dr. Oz's regular appearances on the show. Dr. Oz appeared on 55 episodes of the show over a period of five years, providing viewers with information about health and physical wellbeing. Dr. Oz will now have an Oprah-produced television show, "The Dr. Oz Show," which premieres Monday, September 14. The news was covered by media including Newsday, the Chicago Tribune, the Associated Press, The Record (New Jersey), and E! online.

  • Dr. Oz interviewed actor Michael J. Fox and his family on the March 30, 3009, "Oprah."
  • Dr. Oz was interviewed on the February 24, 2008 "Oprah" regarding the medical and ethical issues of the Suleman octoplets case.
  • During the January 23, 2008 "Oprah", Dr. Oz challenged viewers to make 2008 the year they quit smoking, presenting the latest research, along with new tools and technologies to help smokers who want to conquer smoking.
  • Dr. Oz and NYP Friends on "Oprah"
    Dr. Oz and his NewYork-Presbyterian colleagues Drs. Jonathan LaPook, Kathie-Ann Joseph and Elise Desperito appeared on a special episode of "Oprah" to talk about health screenings and demonstrate a colonoscopy and mammography. In her segment, Dr. Joseph performed a breast screening on a 43-year-old woman with a family history of breast cancer who was having her first mammogram.   • For the August 25, 2009 edition of CBS/TV Good Morning America, Dr. Oz invited Diane Sawyer into the operating room at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia to observe open heart surgery.   • The April 5, 2009The New York Times ran a story about NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's participation in an online personal health records initiative established by Microsoft and Google with large health care providers. NYP is the first large institution to move beyond the pilot stage of the endeavor and begin to offer consumer-controlled health records for patients. Dr. Oz was interviewed for the article. One significant benefit of the initiative, he said, is the mobility of information and ease of access to an online personal health record. Many of his patients are referrals from outside the NewYork-Presbyterian system, he explained. When they arrive, he said, they typically come in with incomplete paper records and patchy recollections of past care.

  • Dr. Oz was quoted in a March 31, 2009 article in the Daily Mail (UK) regarding findings of the Million Women Study, which was run by Oxford University scientists. The study was set up in 1996 to examine the effects of HRT and possible links to cancer and other diseases. "If you have more than 200 orgasms a year, you can reduce your physiologic age by six years," said Dr. Oz. "Sexual activity... seems to offer some survival benefit."
  • On March 1, 2009, The Huffington Post ran an article regarding comments provided by four medical experts addresing Senatorial leaders on the subject of President Obama's health care reform initiatives. America "must find new ways to address the poor health record and staggering expenditures gripping our country," urged Dr. Oz, who was one of the four.
  • Dr. Oz was one of seven experts whose comments appeared in an article in the March, 2009 issue of Oprah Magazine regarding how to gain peace of mind in the face of common worries. Dr. Oz responded to the concern that a person who has cancer in their family is destined to get cancer, too. "You can't control your genes," he said, "but they aren't as significant as how you affect them with risk factors you can control, such as smoking and obesity."

  • Dr. Oz was quoted in a February 19, 2009, article in Natural Health magazine about how powerful negative emotions like depression, anger, and anxiety impact women's heart health.
  • On February 6, 2009, Dr. Oz appeared on "Good Morning America" presenting five health tips for women.
    Comments from Dr. Oz appeared in a February, 2009, Reader's Digest article about new approaches to weight loss. Regarding Rimonabant, a new hunger-inhibiting drug from Sanofi-Aventis that is awaiting FDA approval, Dr. Oz emphasized that the drug won't be a cure-all. "You can eat your way through rimonabant — and all obesity treatments," he said.

  • On January 22, 2009, the Dr. Oz and his co-author, Dr. Michael Roizen, appeared on ABC's Good Morning America talking about chronic pain. To accompany the show, ABC News.com ran an excerpt from their newest book, YOU: Being Beautiful.
    During the week of January 19, Dr. Oz appeared on CNN's Larry King Live discussing vitamin D deficiency in the context of Oprah Winfrey's attempts to lose weight. He was interviewed by CNBC about leading a healthful lifestyle, including through the use of exercise, massage and yoga. The New York Post reported that Dr. Oz plans tape his upcoming health-themed talk show in New York City.
  • On January 6, 2009, Dr. Oz provided a comment for an ABC News.com story on a scheme called "negative option" advertising, which falsely claims endorsements from a celebrity. These ads have falsely claimed that Oprah Winfrey endorses the acai berry as a weight loss miracle. Dr. Oz, who appears on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" as a medical expert, told ABCNews.com that he had never officially endorsed acai for weight loss. "Acai is a powerful antioxidant," said Oz. "Colorful, dark foods like red wine, pomegranates, concord grapes, blueberries — they call them brain berries — are full of nutrients." As far as those weight loss properties, Oz said, "I'd be surprised if by itself acai could help."

Dr. Oz was quoted in the article "America's Health Checkup," which discussed the sub-standard state of health and healthcare in America.   • The New York Daily News reported that Dr. Oz gave the keynote address at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation's second annual Pulse of the City Gala, which took place on November 20, 2008.
  • On November 14, 2008, Dr. Oz appeared live via satellite on The Oprah Winfrey Show from the occupational health services clinic on the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia campus. In the segment, Dr. Oz discussed the method of cotton swabbing saliva inside the mouth to take a DNA sample, which was listed as one of Time magazine's Top 50 technology innovations.   • The November 2, 2008 New York Post ran a story about NYP/Columbia transplant patient Kory Boglarski, who ran the 2008 New York City Marathon. Diagnosed with cardiomyopathy as a 16-year-old, Boglarski received a heart transplant in 2995, which was performed by Dr. Oz.

Dr. Mehmet Oz was featured in the 75th anniversary edition of Esquire magazine (October, 2008 as one of Esquire's "75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century." Profiled along with the likes of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Steve Jobs and President-elect Barack Obama.

Dr. Oz contributed several tips to an article in the September issue of O — The Oprah Magazine about soothing hunger in order to keep to a diet. His suggestions included eating nuts, which lower body levels of a hormone called ghrelin that stimulates appetite. "If you eat a few nuts 30 minutes before dinner, your hunger will drop off dramatically," he said.

  • Dr. Oz was quoted in an August 25, 2008 New York Sun article about prepared hot- and cold food bars at Whole Foods and other health food retailers. The article addressed the issues of overeating and unhealthy eating at prepared food bars, where portions cannot be clearly delineated, and levels of ingredients such as cholesterol and sodium are not immediately apparent to the consumer.
  • On August 4, 2008, Forbes Magazine ran a profile of Dr. Oz, focusing on the personal characteristics that have led to his connection with Oprah and his Oprah-backed syndicated daily TV talk show (set to begin in September, 2008).
  • Mehmet Oz, MD was quoted in an August 4, 2008 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article regarding the eating and exercise habits of children in Georgia, where more than 59,000 middle school and 50,000 high school children are considered obese. Dr. Oz said that parents compound the obesity problem by making exercise too difficult and not allowing a child's taste buds to mature. "Kids have more taste buds [10,000 compared with 3,000 for adults] so they don't experiment with food," he said. "If they're never exposed to anything but burgers and fries, their taste buds never mature. They never get sophisticated in how they taste foods."

  • On May 22, 2008, the New York Daily News published an item on brides and drastic pre-wedding weight loss, which included a comment from Dr. Oz.
  • Dr. Oz appeared on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" the week of May 16, 2008. During the segment he offered Colbert's audience health tips and discussed his book YOU: The Owner's Manual.
  • On May 13, 2008, ABC News.com featured an ABC News viewer Q&A with Dr. Oz on the subject of exercising the brain. "Almost all diet pills work by teasing your metabolism through unnatural means," he said. "Potential problems include racing heart, anxiety disorders, irritable bowels, acid reflux."
  • Dr. Oz appeared on the May 12, 2008 ABC News/World News Tonight with Charles Gibson for a discussion of disease prevention in the contexts of family history and heart disease.

  • Joining such luminaries as the Dalai Lama, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Steve Jobs, Dr. Mehmet Oz has been named to Time magazine's annual list of the 100 "World's Most Influential People." Dr. Oz was profiled in the April 25, 2008 Time magazine by Eric Ripert, executive chef of Le Bernardin, who switched places for a day with Dr. Oz. Mr. Ripert writes of Dr. Oz, "He is a man of extraordinary compassion and strength, remarkably suited both to caring for his own patients and to carrying a message of health to a larger world. Perhaps when you've had the powerful experience of opening human hearts, you find it a little easier to open your own."
  • During mid-April 2008, The New York Times, the New York Post, the Chicago Tribune, Newsday, the San Jose Mercury News, the Denver Post, Variety, Broadcasting and Cable, Reuters, KTAR Radio (Phoenix), iVillage and Perez Hilton ran stories about the possibility that Dr. Oz.may get his own nationally syndicated health-themed program under the imprimatur of Oprah Winfrey, with episodes to air beginning in the fall of 2009. A previous Oprah spin-off starring Dr. Phil McGraw has been highly successful. Dr. Oz already hosts a show on the Discovery Health Network.
  • The April 7, 2008 New York Sun ran a profile of Dr. Oz in the context of his campaigns to improve the eating habits of New York City schoolchildren.

  • The December 21 New York Sun reported on Dr. Oz's HealthCorps, a health education program to promote healthful city eating. HealthCorps has teamed up with the city's Healthy Bodegas Initiative, an effort to ensure that low-fat milk and healthy foods are available at neighborhood bodegas.
  • The December, 2007 issue of Education Update reported on Dr. Oz's appearance as keynote speaker for a Superintendent's Conference Day of staff development workshops at Syosset High School. The November 6, 2007 event drew 1,100 attendees.
  • Dr. Oz was cited in a December 11, 2007 article in the Irish news site independent.ie on how moods affect our health. The story was picked up by the Belfast Telegraph and the Irish Independent.

  • Dr. Oz appeared in several segments on News Channel 8/Washington, D.C. during November, 2007, including a profile and a segment on colon cancer as a serious health threat for women.
  • Dr. Oz provided comments for a November 15, 2007 press release from the Royal Thai Embassy Office of Commercial Affairs. The release was titled "Six Fresh Fruits From Thailand Enter the United States for the First Time." The release appeared on Marketwire.com. The list of fruits is mangosteen, rambutan, longan, lychee, mango, and pineapple. In his comments, Dr. Oz cited mangosteen as one of the "ancient healing tools that have strong antioxidants to promote everything from sexuality to longevity."
  • In the November 15, 2007 issue of Forbes, which ran a special report on food, Dr. Oz was interviewed for in a section called "Two Meals," featuring short interviews with a variety of different personalities about what would be their last meal and what was their most memorable meal.
  • Dr. Oz was cited in a November 13, 2007 Chicago Tribune article about a beneficial property of allicin, a chemical found in garlic. Allicin has been shown to effectively kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). "We believe garlic is effective against MRSA and other resistant bugs," he said. "[Allicin] is a fascinating mechanism that plants use to protect themselves."

  • The August 21, 2001 New York Daily News profiled Dr. Mehmet Oz's Health Corps, a program he founded with the goal of reducing medical intervention by changing the attitudes and lifestyles of young people. Dr. Oz says he founded HealthCorps because, as a cardiac surgeon, he is seeing more and more young people with heart problems.
  • Health Corps, modeled after the Peace Corps, aims to enlist dedicated, health-conscious youth and train them to go into their schools and communities and generate genuine grass-roots health activism. During fall, 2007, the program will also be helping New York City promote its "Healthy Bodega" initiative to assist bodega owners in carrying healthful food. HealthCorps programs currently exist in 28 New York City high schools, seven of them in the Bronx, and the initiative is now turning its sights on other parts of the U.S.
  • The August Edition of New York Newsday's Wellness magazine ran an article on belly fat, eating habits and the biochemistry of hunger, featuring Dr. Mehmet Oz and his book YOU: On a Diet.

  • A July 6, 2007 South Florida Business Journal article announced that the Foundation for the Advancement of Cardiac Therapies (FACT) has decided against moving its headquarters to Palm Beach County from New York City.   • The February 16, 2007 New York Daily News reported that former major league baseball player Frank Torre needs a kidney transplant. Dr. Oz, who performed Torre's heart transplant over a decade ago, was quoted in the article.
  • Dr. Oz was quoted in a February 5, 2007 USA Today article about a Chicago woman who has suffered since birth from a rare heart condition, and who by being a proactive patient has thwarted several potentially dangerous medical mistakes.   • January 25, 2007 articles in South Florida's The Business Journal and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel detailed plans to move headquarters of the Foundation for the Advancement of Cardiac Therapies (FACT) to Palm Beach County from New York City. The foundation, led by Dr. Oz, promotes and supports scientific research and cutting-edge treatments for heart failure. The foundation would also house Dr. Oz's HealthCorps program, which educates youngsters about diet, nutrition and exercise.
  • During the week of January 22, 2007, Dr. Oz appeared on ABC's 20/20 and Univision's "Aqui y Ahora" discussing You: the Smart Patient, which he co-authored with Dr. Michael Roizen.
