Team Conferences Neither federal or commercial health insurers reimburse physicians for team conferences without the presence of the patient. Although team conferences are nonreimbursable in and of themselves, there may be a billable event if the following circumstances are met: 1. The patient is present. 2. An individual physician provided a discernable service during the team conference to the patient. 3. The medical necessity for the individual encounter with the patient during the team conference, and level of documentation available supports the service provided. 4. The service would be submitted for the appropriate place of service. An Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN), even if obtained, would not be considered valid or acceptable. Patients and/or family members may not be billed for team conferences.
