Data Mining Software Approved by HCFA

The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) recently approved data mining software for use by nationwide Peer Review Organizations (PROs). HCFA hopes that this software will strengthen and support its initiatives in the Payment Error Prevention Program (PEPP). The software was designed by SPSS, Inc., and is known as Clementine. Nine PROs have purchased $1.2 million in Clementine software and services.

The PEPP was established by HCFA following a 1997 audit that estimated more than $4 billion was paid in error for inpatient hospital services during 1996 and 1997.
