Professional Medical Coding CourseThe Office for Billing Compliance continues to offer the professional medical coding course, established by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) to all University administrative staff free of charge. The course is conducted twice a year, in the fall, and the spring. Participants may wish to sit for the Certified Professional Coder's exam upon completion of the course. There is a charge of $500 to the respective clinical departments for those administrative staff members who do wish to follow through with certification. To date, 95 people, (84 departmental billing staff and 11 private pay attendees) have completed the course. There are approximately 30 Certified Professional Coders currently on staff within the clinical departments, many achieving certification as a result of this opportunity. The course was recently expanded to 12 weeks, with an additional 4-week exam preparatory course. Non-university staff are charged $1,500 for the 16-week course and examination.
