Overpayment Refunds May Result in Audits

Beginning July 1, 2000, the Medicare carrier may audit physicians and group practices that voluntarily refund large sums of money. Refunds amounting to 20% or more of the carrier's annual reimbursement, or if the carrier suspects a pattern of inappropriate payment, will be subject to further investigation.

The Office for Billing Compliance will assist in the coordination of refunds
