CPT Codes 99214 & 99233 TargetedThe Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), recently issued a letter to 800,00 physicians addressing CPT codes 99214 & 99233. These codes, when reviewed nationally, were found to have the least supportive documentation. The 99214-service code describes a subsequent office visit, moderate complexity, with a total of 25 minutes spent with the patient. The 99233-service code describes a subsequent hospital visit, high complexity, with a total of 35 minutes spent with the patient and on the unit. Local carriers will be conducting documentation audits on these codes as required by the HCFA. All letters of audit should be forwarded to the Office for Billing Compliance for a coordinated response. New ICD-9-CM Codes to be issued October 1, 2000 HCFA will begin to pay closer attention to the use of the V codes this fall. HCFA plans to monitor the use of "unspecified" type diagnosis codes. Use the 4th & 5th digits for greater specificity of the diagnosis if applicable. |
