OIG Work Plan for 2002

The Office of the Inspector General released its 2002 work plan, which among other initiatives announced its focus for reviews on the following types of professional services:

1. Monitoring access of beneficiaries to preventive health services
2. Billing for resident services
3. Correct use of consultation codes 4. One-day hospital admissions
5. Hospital discharges with subsequent readmissions within a short span of time
6. Consecutive inpatient hospital admissions
7. Correct use of advanced beneficiary notices (ABNs)
8. Application of the Physicians at Teaching Hospital (PATH) Regulations
9. Inpatient dialysis services
10. Bone density screening
11. "Incident to" the physician's care provision
12. Medical necessity for durable medical equipment
13. Billing for cholesterol testing
14. Payment for Epogen
15. Continued investigations of health care fraud allegations 16. Pharmaceutical commercial gifts and payments to providers
17. Organ donations at transplant hospitals.
