New CPT Categories of CodesTwo new categories of CPT codes have been introduced with the 2002 Current Procedural Terminology manual. Category II codes have been developed for performance measures using four digits followed by the letter "F". Category III codes have been developed for emerging technologies using four digits followed by the letter "T". CMS will reimburse Category III codes based on individual consideration. CMS will not reimburse Category II codes. Category III codes found in the CPT manual should be used to identify the service instead of an unlisted Category I code ending in "99" found at the conclusion of each chapter. (Category I codes continue to be five digits, all numeric.) The use of the Category III codes will assist insurers in identifying newly emerging technologies, and may result in the eventual development of a Category I code in the body of the CPT manual. |
