Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield Emphasizes Correct Billing PatternsEmpire Blue Cross Blue Shield recently announced it plans to update its commercial claim adjudication policies to include:
HCFA medical coding policies including the Correct Coding Initiative;
AMA coding guidelines;
Local Medicare policies;
Nationally recognized academy and specialty society guidelines;
ICD – 9 and CPT coding compatibility and specificity;
and
Site of service differential.
Physician office staff should be aware of these changes and possible claim payment delays or denials. The Office for Billing Compliance recommends the application of universal coding and documentation standards for all payers.
