Injections provided in an Office Setting

The Medicare program will reimburse for certain drugs and injectables that are administered in a physician’s office, if the physician or the physician group purchases them. Injectable drugs and their administration are separately reimbursable by Medicare. Occasionally the office visit may not be reimbursed dependent on the medical necessity of the service and methodology used for the claim submission.

The key criteria for injectable drug reimbursement is that it must be a physician expense incurred in the private office. Injecting sample medications provided by pharmaceutical companies cannot be submitted for payment. The submission of a claim for a drug provided in a physician’s office infers to the carrier that the physician purchased the supply. Samples obtained free of charge are not reimbursable.
