CICU--Our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) offers expert care for the most critically ill cardiac patients. In this eighteen-bed unit, we treat complex cardiac conditions including:
- Acute coronary syndromes, including acute myocardial infarction
- Cardiogenic shock
- End-stage congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy, including patients awaiting cardiac transplantation or the implantation of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)
- Complicated supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias and heart block
- Congenital heart disease complications in adults
- Pulmonary hypertension
Our highly skilled team of medical professionals has extensive experience in managing some of the most high risk and seriously ill cardiac patients. Attending physicians, cardiology division fellows, physician assistants, and medical house staff, along with specialty-trained cardiac nurses with critical care expertise, provide round-the-clock care using the most sophisticated hemodynamic monitoring available. The most critically ill patients each have a single nurse assigned exclusively to them. We never assign more than two patients to one nurse.
If your loved one is in the CICU at Columbia, we understand that you will want to spend as much time together as possible. To keep families together, we have established a unique policy: our CICU is the only unit in the area to date that offers essentially unrestricted visiting hours for families. For your convenience, the family waiting room for the CICU is located on the same floor--Milstein 5, Hudson South--nearby the unit.
