Buprenorphine
is an opiate and an effective pain medication. It has been used for
this purpose for many years – mostly used in its injectable
form. Buprenorphine is now available in the United States as an oral
medication. It is 15 times more potent than injected morphine. The
medication is different from other opiates so the client usually feels
more “clear headed” when taking buprenorphine. An evaluation
for chronic pain management will be made by the Program’s physicians
to determine if buprenorphine is the appropriate medication for treatment.
