A
special waiver is required for physicians to prescribe buprenorphine
for office-based treatment of opioid dependence. The waiver can be
obtained by completing 8 hours of training, offered on-line and in
seminar training, provided by ASAM, AAAP, APA or other organizations
designated by the Department of Health and Human Services. In addition,
the qualifying physician must have the capacity to refer patients
for appropriate counseling and ancillary services. Individual states
may also have specific requirements.
