International Electives for P & S Students
at
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
Medical School for International Health
in collaboration with
Columbia University Medical Center
WHAT: In 1996, Columbia University and Ben-Gurion University initiated an international collaboration in global health medical education, establishing the first four year, American-style medical degree taught in English and incorporating global health in all four years of the medical curriculum. Known as the Medical School for International Health (MSIH), this venture is directed at Columbia University by Dr. Richard Deckelbaum, Director of Columbia University's Institute of Human Nutrition.
WHO: Through Columbia University's partnership with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Faculty of Health Sciences, students at the College of Physicians and Surgeons may pursue elective options with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. HERE: Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Faculty of Health Sciences, in Beer Sheva, Israel and international clinical sites for the Medical School for International Health in India, Ethiopia, Kenya, Peru, Vietnam, and Nepal.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE: P & S students have several options. This includes:
- Fourth year clinical or research electives at Ben-Gurion University Faculty of Health Sciences, for which Hebrew is strongly preferred for the clinical rotations. Hebrew is not as required for the research electives. These electives are usually one month in duration and the clinical electives are at the Soroka University Medical Center affiliation with BGU.For a list of elective fields open to P & S students see BGU Electives for P&S Students. Click here for information about the Soroka University Medical Center.

- Participation in the fourth year international health and medicine clerkships with students in the collaborative Medical School for International Health. General information and an application are attached. Hebrew is not required for any of these electives. English is the language of instruction and knowledge of local languages is a plus. These are structured, eight- week, international clerkships with a small group of MSIH students working under the supervision of local, MSIH-approved, preceptors. Students must participate in pre-departure orientations in Israel and complete an international health project. Please note these elective sites are subject to changes based on local security conditions and availability of space for visiting students.
