India
By Joel Rosen (Class of 2002)
On an average day we have morning report at 7:30 a.m. At one, a new measles outbreak was discussed; at another, perinatal mortality was the topic. Every day four students travel with a group of doctors or nurses to rural villages. We traverse rice paddies and negotiate livestock to village huts where the nurses see their patients. The other four students stay at Community Health and Development, the local community hospital, following the doctors on rounds or sitting with them in clinics. Most cases are pediatric or obstetric. The cases are incredible. We have seen measles, mumps, typhoid, tuberculosis, HIV and various dermatological conditions. There is also a leprosy ward off the of the hospitals main building. For our last two weeks we are studying at the Christian Medical College Hospital, a major referral center for all of India.
India is a blend of modern and developing worlds. There is poverty, disease and social inequality. Yet there are also amenities and technology. We have Internet and phone lines. Though expensive, they are reliable. On the weekends we can travel by rail to several different destinations, each with its unusual sights.
Our collective experiences have been remarkable. I dont think any of us have regrets. Knowing what we do now wouldnt have changed our minds about being here.
