Fourth-Year IHM Electives

Please Note: Due to administrative changes only recently announced by the U.S. Department of Education in July, 2009, the MSIH has temporarily suspended clerkships outside of Israel and the United States for U.S. citizens who receive U.S. government-guaranteed student loans. (For those not taking such loans, the international clerkships continue without interruption -- see below)  For the 2010 academic year, fourth year MSIH students who are taking federal student loans are being directed to international health and medicine clerkships in the United States or Israel at sites serving diverse populations in urban medical centers, at rural health facilities, or in clinical sites that serve Native Americans. MSIH is working towards finding a long-term solution so that all of our students will continue to be able to benefit from international clerkships.

The MSIH’s fourth year international clerkship sites in India, Ethiopia, Kenya, Peru, Uganda, and Nepal remain open to MSIH students who are not taking U. S. federal loans.

During the spring of the fourth year, students participate in the International Health and Medicine Clerkship, an innovative and unique two-month program that takes place in a lesser-developed region of the world.

The IHM clerkship may be done at Moi University Faculty of Health Sciences in Eldoret, Kenya; Addis Ababa University Medical Faculty in Ethiopia; B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Nepal, Christian Medical College in Vellore, India; and approved clinical sites in Peru.

Students wishing to remain in Israel for the IHM clerkship may choose from sites including the Augusta Victoria Hospital in East Jerusalem as well as sites that provide access to the indigenous Bedouin or Orthodox Jewish communities.

Students may also apply for approval to do their IHM clerkship at other international sites.

The clerkship, under the supervision of an academic coordinator from the host university, consists of a two-month clinical rotation (with local students) at a university teaching hospital and/or a community health center, combined with a supervised research project dealing with health-related issues of the site.

The goal of the clerkship is to enable the student to experience the practice of medicine in a cultural environment other than his/her own and to apply theoretical knowledge to different cultures and ethnic groups while working under varied conditions affected by the economics, traditions, religious beliefs, limited resources and geography of the site.
