Carol Prives, PhD, is the DaCosta Professor of Biology and the chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University. In1998 she was awarded a Research Professorship from the American Cancer Society. In 2000 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her area of research interest is on the structure and function of the p53 tumor suppressor protein. More recently her laboratory has been at the forefront of determining the modes by which cells signal to p53 after DNA damage. Dr. Prives serves on the editorial boards of Cell, Genes & Development, J. Biol. Chem and Cancer Research among others. She was also an editor for Journal of Virology (1991-1999), She has served on a number of Scientific Advisory Boards and numerous review boards, including the NIH Virology Study Section, the Damon Runyon Fellowship Committee, New Jersey Cancer Commission, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
