Kristina Orfali, PhD has just joined Columbia Faculty as an Associate Clinical Professor of Bioethics in Pediatrics and is a Research Scholar at Institute for Social and Economic Research and policy (ISERP). She has worked in a cross cultural perspective on patient's hospital experiences, as well as on clinicians and families decision making in intensive care units. Her more recent work focuses on international variations in medical prognosis in neonatology and she is interested in linking decision theory to empirical results. She works too with colleagues from behavioral sciences on the negative psychological consequences of choosing in life and death contexts. Trained as a sociologist in France, she has been an Assistant Professor in Medicine at the MacLean Center for Clinical Ethics at the University of Chicago and Directeur de Recherches at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in France. She has initiated and helped implementing clinical ethics in France with Bernard Kouchner, the French Health Minister at that time.
