Renee C. Fox, PhD, is the Annenberg Professor Emerita of the Social Sciences, and a Senior Fellow of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also a Research Associate at Queen Elizabeth House (The International Development Centre) at the University of Oxford. Her major teaching and research interests -- in the sociology of medicine, medical research, medical education, and medical ethics -- have involved her in first-hand studies in Continental Europe, Central Africa, and China, as well as in the United States. Her best-known books include: Experiment Perilous: Physicians and Patients Facing the Unknown; The Sociology of Medicine: A participant Observer's View; The Courage to Fail: A Social View of Transplants; and Spare Parts: Organ Replacement in American Society.
